A NASA Space Launch System (SLS) nevezetű rakétája minden idők legnagyobb teljesítményű hordozóeszköze, a fejlesztése mögötti cél a Holdra való visszatérés, de akár a Marsra való eljutás is – mondta Kiss László csillagász, azt is hozzátéve, hogy a rakétával a külső bolygók – Jupiter, Szaturnusz – felé is küldeni lehet majd nagyobb szondákat anélkül, hogy évek teljenek el. "Ez egyértelműen a jelenkor rakétatechnológiájának a csúcsragadozója” – emelte ki.
Az SLS első, Hold körüli tesztútjára valamikor a nyár folyamán kerül majd sor, a rakétának a kipróbálása pedig április elejére várható, amikor gyakorlatilag 10 másodperccel az indítás előttig végigmennek az egész eljáráson. Kipróbálják a rakétahordozó anyag biztonságos feltöltését és leeresztését, ami 700 gallon, azaz nagyjából 350 ezer liter folyékony hidrogén és folyékony oxigén keverékét jelenti.
